I have this really fantastic pie crust recipe.

It has neat little tricks like freezing the dough (for that extra flakiness).

There is only one problem with my delicious recipe.

It makes me. CRAZY.

Like nutso, get out of my kitchen, I’ve got to concentrate or the world as we know it is over – CRAZY.

There is just something about a pie crust that makes me feel like it has to be exactly right or everyone will laugh and point and say “HA! Cooking fail!”.

I feel exactly the same way about my photos.

I see people like Jasmine Star outsourcing their edits and album design and I just cringe.

“But HOW!?” I scream silently to myself. “What about CONTROL and making sure every little detail is just… so?”

And then I give up on editing again and wander in my kitchen to try out that awesome Apple Pie I saw on the internet. But this time is different. This time I have a secret weapon.

Wait for it…… refrigerated pie crust. GASP! No!

YES! Yes, a million times yes. My world is forever changed.

And then it hits me. If I can outsource something as incredibly important as pie crust, what ELSE can I add to the list of things I don’t have to worry the heck about anymore?

Editing and album design… and … EVERYTHING!

Ok, maybe not everything. But those first two, I can handle that. Because, really, as Jasmine says, I’m not a photoshopper, I’m a photographer.

7 photography editing and album design companies

So here are some awesome, reputable outsourcing resources that will help you take your life back from the deep abyss of “do it all yourself” syndrome.

Over the past year and a half that I’ve been writing here I’ve been hiding a problem.

I either write like a tech geek or an advertisement.

Those aren’t me.

When you write for your blog you have what we marketing nerds call “a voice”. If you aren’t careful, that voice can take over and portray something unwanted to your readers.

That is my problem. Yes, I am totally obsessed with web and SEO, which makes me a tech geek. But in reality, I am a lot more than that.

When I try to correct it I tend to flip to the other side of the coin, marketing speak. I tend to sell ideas and techniques when all you want is a helping hand!

So I am making a public declaration of my intent to bring myself into my writing. I have a few techniques I’m going to share with you in some upcoming posts, but for now I’m just going to start things off with a list of random things you don’t know about me. These are totally off the cuff and some of them are only known by very close friends and family.

Here we go!

I make up random songs about life situations, such as my child not wanting to wear clothes or little fuzzy kitten heads.

I am completely obsessed with the Holocaust, WWII and the 40’s.

I am a Christian and unapologetically conservative politically.

I watch the Notebook at least twice a year, but I think the book is crap.

I have a photographic memory and am super paranoid. The combination is the reason why I don’t watch scary movies. In short – “Heebie Jeebies”

I don’t understand people’s obsession with celebrities. At all.

I’ve had professional drift drivers slide around me so close I could have hit their car with my camera.

I used to play drums in high school. I was the drum captain (not the drum major) and in charge of 10 wild drummer boys. I’m 5’4” and was 105 lbs at the time. Didn’t go so well.

I somehow turned into a very modest, “crunchy” mom after I had my first daughter. My mom did the same and completely changed directions politically when she had her first child. I take after her a lot.

I also used to swim competitively. I still race my sister every time we are in a pool together. It annoys my husband.

I don’t voluntarily hug anyone other than my children or husband, both of whom I am super affectionate with. I’ve been threatened with hugs in order to get me to do things.

SEO is not the least bit boring to me. It makes me giddy.

I used to be a model. I quit after I got to fly to Vegas at age 18 to work for Mazda at SEMA (a massive auto industry show). I felt like that experience had been checked off my to do list and didn’t feel the need to go any further with it.

People think I’m mean or snobby when they first meet me because I’m not a socializer (or hugger..lol). The truth is I am just introverted and am usually just listening.

I’m super into planning my girls’ birthday parties. I work on them all year. I think it is my opportunity to play with the fun things I see at the weddings I photograph.

I read the classic romances (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Mansfield Park, etc) usually once every few years.

Once you get to know me you realize that I am incredibly silly and sarcastic. It’s probably just because my spoon is too big. (1 point for you if you get that reference)

I like to help people and tend to give random tips to friends and family. These are usually related to parenting or cooking, but sometimes business/internet/marketing/etc.

I have a ton of business books and books on apologetics. I’m usually reading several at once.

I close my eyes and feel completely at peace when I listen to live piano or violin music. I can’t play either but may take lessons when my kids are older.

Whew. Just let the crazy spill out all over the place there. It was fun coming up with all of those though.

So watch for upcoming posts to be a little more “Bethany” and a little less “techy marketing chick”.

I encourage you to do something similar on your photography blog. It will help remind you to be yourself and will help your readers connect with you better. Feel free to use this format if you like.

Please leave me a comment and let you know what you think about all my crazy and share this post on Twitter or Facebook or give us a +1 if you enjoyed it.

Flash is a terrible choice for your photography website. There, I’ve said it.

Flash is the enemy of search engines. If your potential customers can’t find your website then it isn’t doing you any good!

Be smart. Don’t give in to the hype. Choose a website platform that is strong, customizable, and is Google’s best friend. WordPress.

WordPress is the not-so-secret secret of anyone who knows that a website should be both beautiful AND searchable.

These flash-free photography website templates will help you be on your way to having a gorgeous (can you believe how gorgeous these are?) website that pulls in searchers like flies to some really awesome cake. You can totally do this.

Don’t know how to install WordPress? See the bottom of the post to find out how to get started.

You need a new website. That one you have just isn’t cutting it.

You might have something that looks ok on the service, but if customers can’t find you or the design isn’t a good representation of your quality or brand, then it really isn’t helping you much.

The “Fake” Website

If you are still using Photoreflect or another print sales system as your site it is time for a change. They may work great for selling prints to customers, but they aren’t a good representation of your brand to a prospect. And no true professional uses a domain with another site tacked on the end. (ie. www.yourname.photoreflect.com). Bleh.

Flash photography websites are worthless. Seriously.

So what about those flash template sites? They’re pretty snazzy right? Well, sure, on the outside. But on the inside is a deep black abyss; to Google anyway.

If you haven’t heard by now, here it is. Search engines can’t read flash. Even if they get there at some point in the future, you will be far far behind your competitors who stepped it up and moved over to an HTML site.

No freebies, no flash. So what now?

So to give you a little kick in the right direction here are 10 well-designed, attractive, stunning website templates that utilize WordPress and HTML. They also all incorporate your blog (you are blogging right?) right into the design so everything is cohesive.

And the best thing? All of these photography website templates are $35 or less. Not $35 per month. Not a $35 deposit. A one time $35 price tag.

King Size ==> CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION This fullscreen template makes a major impact. I love the shape of the menu and its placement. Click the arrow to slide it out of the way for a fullscreen slideshow. It has a built in blog so your blog will match your site. Very nice.

And no flash required!

Your photography blog can actually be the driving force behind booking new clients tomorrow and every day after that.

Your blog can be a place to show people who you really are as both an artist and a person. When people get to know the real you, they become attached to more than just a pretty picture.

The clients you draw in with your personality will be invested in you as a person. They will be predisposed to like the photos you produce for them because you have become a friend, someone they feel connected to.

This is powerful stuff!

What if you could actually like your clients as people? What if every person who walked through your door was a potential friend instead of just a potential paycheck?

Sounds great, right?

It is really easier than it sounds. Tons of photographer’s are doing it every day. A few of them have come together and decided to teach you how to get the same awesome results for your business.

The Photography Blog Success Ebook

Zach Prez and Lara Swanson, with the help of several top photographers, have put together an easy to read ebook to teach you how to make a blog that can start bringing in new clients right now.

The 55 page PDF book is slam full of awesome tips and instructions that detail every step you need to take to have a blog that is more than just a showcase of photos.

Zach says, “When potential clients visit your site, they want to get a feel for you, how you work, and your value – they’re emotionally investing in a photographer. Your personality and tone can be more easily conveyed in a blog than in your portfolio; it’s the perfect place to communicate your value and how you connect with your clients.”

Some things you will learn:

How to start a photography blog site

Common mistakes and how you can avoid them

How to write a great post

When to write your posts

How to get more comments from your readers

How to get your blog and posts found in the search engines

How to write your about page

Along with all of the great tips and instructions from Zach and Lara, you will also find case studies of successful photographers. You can see exactly what they are doing to make their blog work for them.

Why I read this book in the first place

I have been following Zach’s work for a while now and even wrote a guest post for his blog recently. He knows his stuff when it comes to online marketing so I definitely recommend you add his blog to your reader.

When he told me he was coming out with another ebook I knew it would be worth the read. His other book, Photography Web Marketing Guide, is another great one.

Since the blogging book was just released he is offering a discount for the bundle pack. I’m not sure how long that will last though, so I definitely recommend getting your hands on it now.

I hope you get a chance to check out these books. Please let me know what you think of them in the comments.

A simple SEO video tutorial to teach you how to take advantage of a part of your site that is almost always under utilized - the category and tag pages.

Since most photographers use flash websites, our blogs are our most important asset when it comes to getting a little attention from Google.

Even still, most of the content on our blogs consists of images. Unfortunately, Google hasn’t quite learned to see yet, so images don’t quite make the grade either. Of course, you have the ever-important alt tags, but you are still lacking in the text department.

In order to help you offset your blog’s image-heaviness, I have created a simple video tutorial to teach you how to take advantage of a part of your site that is almost always under utilized – the category and tag pages. Did you know you can edit these? Check out the video to see how to use them for some extra SEO juice:

Simple, right? Just a little change could go a long way in getting your category and tag pages ranked. This could result in more bookings as visitors searching for specific terms such as “engagement photographer” will find just the page they are looking for and be that much closer to contacting you.

Here is the code from the video:

Category page:

<?php echo category_description(); ?>

Tag page:

<?php echo tag_description(); ?>

In the video I mentioned that you might not have a tag page in your template files. There is a simple fix. Simply use an FTP program to copy your category template (blog folder > wp-content > themes > yourtheme > category.php ) onto your desktop. Change its filename to tag.php and reupload it to the same folder. WordPress will automatically identify it as your tag template.

Want to do more with your category and tag pages? Check out the WordPress codex for additional info.

Customize your Facebook link thumbnails to get the most clicks from your fans. Learn how to use the Wordpress featured image widget to easily set custom thumbnails for each post.

Your Facebook page might be ugly. It is probably littered with random links with seemingly unrelated thumbnails. You can and should fix it. It only takes 2 minutes so keep reading to take the ugly out of your Facebook page.

Why I use custom Facebook link thumbnails

When you post a blog post link to Facebook you are usually presented with several options for the link thumbnail. These include the images from your blog post as well as your logo and other images on the page. Usually this works fine but sometimes the images are just not suited for use as a thumbnail.

For instance, I format my blog images so that two vertical images are side by side. I do this in Photoshop so the images I upload are either full horizontal images or a composite of two vertical images.

This works out great for my blog but makes for small link thumbnails when I post the link to Facebook.

A while back I published a post about how to customize your Facebook link thumbnails. The problem with this method is that you are limited to one specific thumbnail for every post on your site.

I have a new method. We are going to use WordPress’ built in featured image tool to customize our business Facebook page by taking control of our link thumbnails.

Note: This will only work if your blog theme supports featured images.

Creating your Facebook Link Thumbnail Image

You will first need to choose the image to use for your thumbnail.

As it turns out, all Facebook link thumbnails are not created equal.

Facebook has limited the thumbnail space to 90px X 90px. All vertical or horizontal images will be reduced to 90px at their longest point. Meaning that your image will use less than the space allotted for your link thumbnail.

In order to optimize your image, you will want to crop it to a square ratio before uploading. The size doesn’t really matter, as long as it is over 90px X 90px.

Be sure to use an image that will still look good at such a small size. You will also want to be sure that it is a good representation of the post.

The image won’t show up anywhere else so you don’t have to use one of the images you have already posted. I think it is fun to use a detail shot from the shoot/wedding to give a feel for the style of the photos.

When inside the post editor, choose set featured image from the featured image module in the post editor sidebar.

The uploading tool will open just as it would for uploading an image to insert in your post. Follow the prompts to upload your image.

Once the image has been uploaded, you will need to look under the sizing options and choose Use as featured image.

Click save all changes and be sure to update the post or publish if it isn’t already published.

Tell Facebook where to look

Now that your featured image is set you will need to tell Facebook that it should use it for your thumbnails.

In your WordPress menu, go to Appearance -> Editor. In the right side you will see a list of the various pages and parts of your WordPress theme. Click on the Header file to open it for editing.

Between the <head>...</head> tags copy and paste the following code.

<?php if(is_single()) { ?>

This same technique can be used to get more Facebook fans (likes) for your business.

Do you have a Facebook landing page?

When someone comes to your Facebook page what do they see? Are they presented with a page of random posts about new photos, a conference you recently attended, or how great Jasmine Star’s latest workshop was?

By controlling their first view of your page, you can give them a more favorable and branded view of your business.

This is accomplished through a landing page. A landing page is a page of a website (or Facebook) that is created for the sole purpose of getting a visitor to do something. In this case, we want them to click that Like button so that you can reach them later on through the content you post on your page (which will then wind up in their feed). If they visit your page and don’t click like, then you have lost them forever.

How to create your Facebook page welcome tab

Previously, I showed you how to create a landing page using Facebook’s programming language – FBML. On March 11, 2011 Facebook removed FBML from the options for pages. If you already have a landing page created using FBML it will continue to work. New landing pages, however, cannot use FMBL.

As a replacement, Facebook is finally allowing iFrame tabs for pages. Personally, I am stoked. iFrames allow you to basically “import” a webpage from anywhere. You can do essentially anything with iFrames that you could do on your own site. For code-nuts such as myself, this is an awesome thing. For everyone else, it can seem a little intimidating.

Not to worry! There’s an app for that. (Ugg, I couldn’t resist).

The Static Html: Iframe Tabs Facebook App

Soon after Facebook rolled out these changes, a new app emerged on the scene. The Static Html: Iframe Tabs App makes it incredibly easy to add a welcome page to your Facebook business page.

To begin, go to your search bar in Facebook and search for iframe tab – look for the star thumbnail. Go to the page and look in the bottom of the left hand column. Choose Add to My Page and choose the appropriate Facebook page from your list of pages.

Now, go to your page and look in your menu. (Under the profile picture). Click on the Welcome tab with the star icon. You will be taken to the editor.

The top box is where you will enter the information for your non-fans landing page. This means that anyone who comes to your page that hasn’t already clicked “like” will see this page. You should focus your efforts on getting them to do so. Do not dilute the power of this page by linking to your site or trying to get them to take any other action.

The bottom box is the page people will see after they have liked your page. This is a great place to provide them with other options for getting to know your business. Links to your website, photo slideshows, etc can be posted here.

For a simple solution, create an image in Photoshop (or other editor) to use for each page. Upload it to your server or photobucket (use the “html” linking option) and display it on the page. Use this code for a server-uploaded image:

<img src="http://mysite.com/folder/myimage.jpg" />

If you are a little more comfortable with html, you can add links and anything else you can come up with to your landing pages.

When you are finished click Save and View Tab to check out your new landing pages.

That’s it! The iframe app definitely makes it easier to add Facebook landing pages to your business pages which can result in more Facebook fans.

Extra Credit: To get more bang for your buck create an incentive for them to click your like button. Tell them that they will get a free wedding planning booklet or a discount for portraits. Give them the booklet download or discount instructions on the second page.

Please post a link to your Facebook page so we can see your landing pages.

Referrals and word of mouth marketing are one of the best ways to get clients that are a great fit for your business.

Referrals and word of mouth marketing are one of the best ways to get clients that are a great it for your business. These tips will teach you how to get referrals for your business:

Setup an email newsletter.Sending out a simple email newsletter to your past brides and inquiries is an easy way to keep your business on their mind.

Go beyond the photos.Write a short 1-2 paragraph story of their wedding day at the beginning of their blog post. Show that you were paying attention! Write as if you are writing a (very short!) chapter in a romance novel. Talk about why they and their relationship are unique and explain the wedding day in detail. Every wedding can sound amazing if you present it that way!

Don’t forget about them.Your job isn’t over after the wedding album (or disc) is delivered. Keep up with them! Send them a card or free gift on their wedding anniversary, first Christmas or Valentine’s day. An 8×10 is an easy gift or a simple paper ornament. Let them know that they aren’t just another paycheck!

Beat them home. After you get home from the wedding (or the next day) do a quick run through of their images and pull the best for your blog post. Try to get the blog post up before they get home from their honeymoon. It is so important to do this before the big excitement of the day wears off.

Under promise, over deliver. If you don’t follow any of the other steps, follow this one. In every interaction and promise you make, under promise, over deliver. If you tell them you will have the images ready in 4 weeks, get them to them in 2. It’s as simple as that.

How to get referrals?

Getting great referrals from past clients is not as tough as it seems. If you truly care about your clients and want to give them the best experience you can, they won’t be able to resist telling everyone they know. Everyone loves to share something amazing, right?

So, what other things do you do to create happy clients and generate referrals?

It is important to provide our clients (and prospects!) with large image sizes so as to optimize their viewing experience, but file size should also be a factor when making decisions about design and how you process your images for posting to the Web.

Photographers beware! Google has changed its search rank criteria to include speed. How fast your Web pages load in a user’s browser will now be a determining factor in how high you rank in search engines.

Why should we be concerned? Image size.

As photographers, most of our content is image-based. This means large file sizes and slow loading times.

It is now more important than ever to be sure that your images are properly compressed. The balance between large viewing size and small file size should be moved up on your list of concerns when it comes to your blogging and Web design.

It is important to provide our clients (and prospects!) with large image sizes so as to optimize their viewing experience, but file size should also be a factor when making decisions about design and how you process your images for posting to the Web.

3 steps you can take that won’t affect image quality

Save your blog images to the exact size needed for display before uploading to the Web. Do not compress them later using html or your blog’s editing tools.

Split your photo-heavy posts into multiple pages.

Limit the number of posts displayed on each page of your blog. Look under “Reading” settings in WordPress.

All in all, this is a good thing. I know that I much prefer faster loading sites and i’m sure you do as well. Google is focused on user experience beyond the initial search result and I think this change will definitely have a major impact on the web as a whole.

Get on board! Remember to keep your site(s) simple and quick and hopefully this change will not have a negative impact on your rankings.

Take this new criteria seriously and you could actually see a rank increase as others in your market are not as quick to respond.

What do you think? Are you going to make some changes? Are you confident in the speed of your site and the way you currently handle images? Post a comment and lets discuss!

There are many advantages to using your own name in your business name, but have you ever thought about how this can affect your search ranking efforts?

There are many advantages to using your own name in your business name, but have you ever thought about how this can affect your search ranking efforts? As photographers, many of us have chosen to use our own names when naming our business for several, very important reasons such as artist recognition, longevity, and personalization of the business.

However, most SEO experts would suggest using one (or more) of your keywords in your business name for maximum impact.

I am here to tell you that using your name rather than an industry keyword can actually work out quite well for SEO when used properly. How is that? Well, when your business name includes your real name, your name actually becomes one of your keywords.

Sure, most people searching for your name will find you fairly easily. But what if you are like me and several other businesses/professionals use their name for their business name as well? I want to let Google know that when someone searches for me they are looking for a photographer (despite what those other Bethany Gilberts say).

The easiest way to do this is to comment on other photographer’s blogs.

Seem counter-intuitive?

Here’s how it works. When you comment on another photographer’s blog you (usually) are asked to enter your name, an email address and your website address before adding your comment.

After you click submit, the blog will then turn your name into a link to your site when displaying your comment.

This is called “link text”. Google LOVES link text. Google (and the other search engines) basically looks at the link text and associates whatever site is linked with those words.

So, when you comment on another photographer’s blog using your name as the link text, Google sees two things.

Your site is linked from another photographer’s site, so you must have something to do with photography.

Your link text is your name, so your name must have something to do with photography.

The moral of the story? If your business is named after yourself, comment like there is no tomorrow, and always (always) include your link.

P.S. Please remember to only post comments that are relevant, thoughtful and add something to the blog post. Comment about a particular image you liked for instance. Happy commenting!

P.S.S. Posting comments here will have the same effect since we are optimized for photography keywords. ; )
