How to Batch Watermark Your Photos for Blogs or Facebook

Protecting your copyright online is a difficult, if not impossible, task. Watermarking your photos is a step towards protecting your rights and insuring that you get credit for your work.

Watermarking photos individually can be a huge task. There are various software programs available that are capable of batch watermarking your images; however, I tend to be wary of small, nearly unknown software developers. Plus, who needs another program taking up space on their harddrive?

Most, if not all, photographers have Photoshop installed already and are fairly familiar with its use. Did you know that Photoshop can be used to quickly and easily watermark your images using your actual logo? No text-only watermarks here!

Watch this video to take watermarking your photos from a stressful, lengthy task to a few clicks of the mouse.

Please leave a comment and let me know if this helped you or if you have a suggestion regarding preparing your images for the web.

So often now they are edited out anyway. If you are going  to use a watermark make you use a small one and tile it across the image ... this will make it much harder to remove.  an example of a poorly watermarked image: http://ingimage.com/imagedetails/42016523_extInt0/02E93536-Ingimage-Businesspeople-over-an-empty-white-board.html

What version of photoshop are you using in this tutorial? I'm using 7 and it won't let me select a PNG during the "Place" command.

Ryutso I am using CS5. I'm sorry its not working for you. Try saving your logo as a PSD with a transparent background.

As batch photo watermarking you can use this software: http://bstdownload.com/reviews/batch-photo-watermark-2/

wooooooooooohoooooooooooo ... batch watermark ... awesome ... thanx for sharing your knowledge ... although i went through the image processor in scripts once i recorded my action ... love that mississippi twang

Ha, Oscar. Thanks. I try to be entertaining.

Bethany,

I was so very excited to find your tutorial! Being able to create my own logo/watermark, using the font and special Fx that I want--rather than having to use Photoshop Element 6's very simplistic "font only"... not to mention not being able to position it exactly where I want it positioned on MULTIPLE (i.e. HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF) FILES--really appealed to me!

So, I listened/watched your lesson a number of times while writing down all the instructions so that I could get busy using it without having to stop and refer back to the video countless times during my project.

As instructed, I created (actually changed the one I'd been using) to a .PNG file with a transparent background. (Up until your tutorial, I had never heard of a .PNG file! I had used .PSD and .JPG only.)

So, I thought I was ready to go. However, I cannot find anything in Photoshop Elements 6 (which is what I typed into my search engine when I was looking for tutorials on processing multiple files with my watermark) which allows me to "Create New Action," like your tutorial says to do immediately after preparing my watermark/logo.

Have I spent way too much time on this, only to find out it's not "my version" of Photoshop?? Hopefully not. Please let me know if I can do this in PSE6. I will be forever grateful!!

Thanks for everything,
Bev

Hi Beverly,

I'm sorry to say that you cannot create actions in Photoshop Elements. Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

This is going to save me so much time - for my blog isn't such a big deal but for galleries it can be painstaking! And I've been to a client home and seen a 740px wide gallery image printed and in a frame (which of course looked AWFUL!) - which is what prompted me to watermark all my galleries!! thank you so much!

Awesome! I'm so glad to help. And yeah, that can be stressful to see your images printed using low quality files. Hopefully this will stop some of that! If you have any questions please let me know!

Thank you for the tutorial. I may sound like a total idiot but hey the only stupid questions are the ones that aren't asked...how do you make a transparent logo? I copyright my photos but I do not know how to make an actual transparent watermak png file. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely not a stupid question Romonia! Creating a transparent logo will vary depending on the program you are using to edit your logo. In Photoshop you will usually just need to delete the blank “background” layer in the layers palette. The program will then show a checkered gray and white background to show what areas are transparent. Saving as a PNG would simply be a matter of clicking “save as” and selecting PNG from the drop down menu. If you aren’t using Photoshop or you need additional help with this please let me know!

Thanks for reading!
